Thomas George Fitch was born in 1891 in Hundon, (Risbridge Q3-1891 4A:680), baptised in Hundon on 23rd August 1891, the son of David and Matilda FITCH
(née MAYES).
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Newmarket Road, Moulton, with his father David FITCH [44] horsekeeper; his mother Matilda [44]; sisters Ellen [22], Lizzie [12], Pollie [4] and Florence L [5 weeks] born Moulton; brothers Nathan [19] a yardman and William [17] a labourer, also a boarder Alfred MEDCALF [25] labourer (who eventually married Ellen). All except Florence were born in Hundon. 1911 census...Aged 19 a labourer, he was at The Street, Moulton with his widowed mother, brother William a farm horseman and sisters Pollie and Florence Tillie. One of Matilda's 9 children had died. His father had died in 1904. His mother was later at Melton House, Moulton. Thomas worked at Moulton Paddocks and was related to the PRIGG family |

He enlisted in Newmarket, resided in Moulton. Local sources say he enlisted on 11th September 1914 and served in India? as well as France, being wounded in France in 1916. That
was likely to have been with the Suffolk Regiment. The Military Foot Police wore the badge shown, the Military Mounted Police wore the conventional wreath type badge. The two branches merged in 1926 to form the Corps of Military Police. By the very nature of their branch, the Police were scattered throughout the Army and without Thomas' Army records there is no way of telling exactly where he died, especially as so many graves were concentrated after the war. The cemeteries and memorials in the Middle East being inaccessible or vandalised a two volume Roll of Honour is now maintained at CWGC headquarters at Maidenhead.
